Most beards are washed with whatever is nearest — hand soap, hotel shampoo, the bar in the shower.
That works, in the sense that the beard ends up clean. It also strips the skin underneath, which is why the itching and flaking arrive in week two and get blamed on the weather. A beard wash is a milder cleanser at a pH closer to your face. That is the entire product category, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you a system.
Ours is sulphate free, so it foams less than you expect, and fragrance free, so it doesn't argue with your oil. Two or three washes a week is enough. We'd rather you bought a bottle every four months than every six weeks.
